For Charlotte Schmidt, a social work student at the University of Missouri, volunteering at Grade A Plus has been more than just an extracurricular activity; it’s been a transformative journey. Twice a week, she steps into a space where academic support and emotional growth go hand in hand, working alongside mental health counselor Tasca Tolson in a program focused on social-emotional learning.
“Volunteering in this program has been such a gift,” Charlotte shares. “It’s something I genuinely look forward to every week.”
Charlotte’s work at Grade A Plus bridges the gap between her classroom education and real-life experience. With each session, she applies lessons from her social work studies in meaningful ways: helping students develop confidence, navigate challenges, and celebrate their successes. But Charlotte is quick to note that the learning goes both ways. “My goal is always to help students grow,” she says, “but I’ve learned so much more from them than I ever expected.”
The bonds Charlotte has formed with students have left a lasting impression on her heart and her future career. Through moments of laughter, trust, and shared discovery, she’s witnessed the power of community-based support in action. Her story is a reminder that when young people are surrounded by care and encouragement, they rise and so do the people who walk beside them. Charlotte's journey reflects the very spirit of Grade A Plus: a place where everyone has the chance to learn, grow, and thrive together.
