Building Confidence and Connection Through Tutoring: Emily’s Story

When Emily Stockcamp arrived at the University of Missouri, she was eager to find a way to make a difference in her community. Now a sophomore studying health science with a pre-occupational therapy focus, Emily found that opportunity through Grade A Plus with the MU Community Engaged Learning (CEL) Program, where she tutors local students and helps them reach their academic goals.
For Emily, tutoring has been a powerful reminder that everyone learns differently. “Tutoring has shown me how people come from different backgrounds and face different struggles,” she shared. “School came easily for me, but when I saw my younger brother struggle, I realized how important it is to have someone patient and encouraging to help.”
This perspective has deepened her empathy and commitment to supporting students who may not always have access to the same resources or confidence in themselves.
Each session brings a new opportunity for connection and growth. Emily has witnessed firsthand how consistent encouragement can change a student’s outlook. “At first, some of them don’t believe they can do it,” she said. “But over time, you see them start to try on their own, to read and answer questions before asking for help.”
That transformation, Emily says, is what keeps her coming back. Watching students grow in both academic ability and self-assurance has been one of the most rewarding parts of her college experience. “Their confidence grows little by little, and it’s really sweet to see,” she said with a smile.
Through her work with Grade A Plus, Emily is not only helping students build stronger foundations for their futures, she’s shaping her own. Her experience has affirmed her passion for helping others, a lesson that will carry forward into her future career and beyond.
