Letter From Director - August, 2020

Dear Friends of GAP,

GAP has worked diligently to prepare academic support and enrichment services for Fall 2020-Spring 2021. From Mar. 31 - July 30, 2020, GAP tutors were available every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30-6:15p.m. We've learned a lot about on-line learning and we are ready to work with your child and support their academics during this fall of 2020.

  • GAP will expand to be available for more children to enroll. We intend to offer services 4 afternoons a week to increase the opportunity for more students to participate.

  • GAP hopes to have 40 tutors and 80 students, that's a 1:2 ratio. Each tutor will be assigned 2 students.

  • GAP will continue to focus on Math and Reading support as the primary services, but we can secure tutors in speciality areas where needed, such as chemistry, physics, and spanish.

  • GAP will start with an assessment to identify where the tutors should first concentrate on development and then increase tutorial support to assist with the increasing difficulty of assignments as the term moves on.

GAP will offer enrichment in the form of the writing center, fun with science, virtual tours to enhance learning of History and Culture, yoga, physical exercise, dance, and art presentations.

Mentoring will continue with the Girl Power sessions, Futures Project for middle school and high school students, and break out rooms for discussions and exploration of issues for the day.

GAP has a strong commitment from the College of Education, MU Service Learning and the MU Graduate Math Department to provide support with consistent and committed volunteer tutors. We're also opening discussion with corporations who are exploring ways to enable employees to "log-in" and support on-line learning as members of the community.

The program will officially begin on Sept. 15th and once volunteers have been matched, late enrollees will be placed on a waiting list for services.

You have the option of going on line and completing the Application form for Fall 2020. Returning student enrollees should be finalized by Aug. 31st. Slots will be opened for new students as of Sept. 1st. School begins on Sept. 8th.

It has been a pleasure working with youth and we look forward to the return of previous students and the many new ones yet to join into this community.

Letter From Director - August, 2019

Friends, GAP has been serving youth and families of Columbia for 20 years now. Like anything else, it started small, just a few kindhearted people and a willingness to give of their time and resource
